If you have period problems, you have to address the gut.

Have you ever heard of the "estrobolome"?

It’s a fascinating part of your gut microbiome that plays a crucial role in maintaining hormonal balance.

If you have period problems and you are not addressing your gut health you are not getting to the root of the issue.

Estrogen dominance is one of the most common hormone imbalance issues, and dysfunctional digestion is a major driver.

Digestive conditions such as IBS, IBD, dysbiosis, acid reflux, SIBO, leaky gut, constipation, diarrhea and food intolerances all directly impact our clearance and production of estrogen - and therefore hormonal balance.

A simplified snapshot of estrogen detoxification:

Estrogen is cleared in the body by the liver, and then sent to the gut for further digestion by a collection of beneficial bacteria, known as our estrobolome. These bacteria break down and regulate the estrogen in the body.

However, there are microbes in the estrobolome that produce beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme which reverses the process that makes estrogen less active, essentially undoing the liver's work of preparing estrogen for removal from the body via the stool.

This allows estrogen to be reabsorbed, causing dominance and promoting the development of estrogen-related issues such as:

  • Endometriosis

  • PCOS

  • PMS/PMDD

  • Painful menstruation

  • Heavy menstruation

  • Clotting

  • Breast tenderness

  • Weight gain

  • Bloating

  • Depression/Anxiety
